One of our awareness forum at Claire’s community Centre Dandora and Grapeyard primary school Korogocho.Teachers ,caregivers and parents gathered to get information about Sickle Cell Disease. Teachers in particular gained a lot of knowledge on how to support students with Sickle Cell condition in school and even in their respective classes. Children are suffering in silence ;they face stigma from other students and its difficult for them to understand why they are being discriminated by their peers. Some of their friends think that they pretend to be sick so as to miss school. It’s sad that even some of the teachers have the same mentality .
Sickle Cell Disease doesn’t affect ability to learn .However, complications from the disease interferes with school. Students with Sickle Cell disease can achieve their education goals if given support from teachers ,parents and community at large .It is important to enlighten teachers and every staff member at school about sickle cell and its management so that they can understand how to handle a student with sickle cell disease .Teachers can [play a vital role in providing psychological and emotional support to these children .Children with Sickle cell condition are very bright ,with all round support they can realize their full potential and achieve their dreams in life .
